Kirkland, "where the spirit of community thrives", is the eastside's oldest city. It was founded on the east shore of Lake Washington by Peter Kirk, more than a century ago. This suburban community centers itself on waterfront recreation activities, with two sailing schools, a public marina, boat launch and docks for touring boats. The city offers four community sports parks, including nine neighborhood parks, two public swimming pools, a senior center, a new performing art center, new library and a little league park.
A picturesque community, with four miles of lakefront, Kirkland is known for the growth in harmony beside Lake Washington. Both residential and the city's downtown shopping area are just a short stroll to the lake. Excellent restaurants, art galleries, coffee and specialty shops make Kirkland's downtown "the village that everyone loves to walk to.
